Background Profile

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche (b.1950), a renowned and popular Tibetan religious leader in Sichuan, was involved in supporting schools, monasteries, and orphanages in Tibet; opposing extensive logging in the region; and supporting the Dalai Lama.

Arrested on April 7, 2002, he was sentenced to death (with a two-year reprieve) on December 2, 2002, for crimes of terror and incitement to separatism, allegedly for his assistance in planning bombings. No evidence was made public, and he reportedly confessed under torture.
