Letter Appeals on Religious Education for Ethnic Minorities
Send an appeal to the Director of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, urging protection for freedom of religion, preservation of cultural identity, and protection of religious education and practice for ethnic minorities. A sample letter is provided below.
Ye Xiaowen
Director of the State Administration for Religious Affairs
44 Hou Hei Bei Yan
Xicheng District
Beijing 100009
People's Republic of China
Dear Sir:
I am writing to express my grave concern regarding reports of ongoing violations of the right of ethnic minorities to access religious education in various parts of China-in particular, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the Tibetan Autonomous Region, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The Chinese government has signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and has stated that it will ratify it on numerous occasions. I also understand that the PRC Constitution guarantees the right of religious education under the laws of China. The reported violations of religious freedom raise questions regarding the commitment of the Chinese government to implementing rights to freedom of religious education included in the ICCPR and the PRC Constitution.
In light of international standards and the Chinese government's own protections for religious education in the Constitution and elsewhere, I urge you to immediately review policies and laws related to religious education throughout China to ensure full respect for the right of ethnic minorities to access religious education.
Sincerely,
[your name]
