Background Profile

Shuang Shuying (b.1931) is the mother of house church activist Hua Huiqi, who was detained from early February to late July 2007 after petitioning to the National People's Congress over forcible eviction without adequate compensation.

On February 9, 2007, Shuang was arrested for intentional damage of property after protesting her son's detention, and on February 26 was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and fined 2,000 yuan.

She is currently held at Beijing Women's Prison and is in poor health. She is due for release in 2009.
