Background Profile

Huang Jinqiu (b.1974), a veteran journalist, began posting essays on the Boxun website (http://www.peacehall.com) under the name Qing Shuijun (Lord Clearwater), and in January 2003 stated his intention to found the China Patriotic Democracy Party. He was arrested on September 13, 2003, soon after returning to China from Malaysia, where he had been studying journalism on scholarship at the Central Academy of Art.

On September 27, 2004, he was convicted of incitement to subvert state power and sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment, followed by four years' deprivation of political rights.

He is currently held at Pukou Prison in Jiangsu Province and is due for release in 2015.
