HRIC Reports and Press Releases
China: Minority Exclusion, Marginalization and Rising Tensions - By Human Rights in China, commissioned by Minority Rights Group International - This report examines China's autonomy system, and how despite formal guarantees of self-governance and minority protections for ethnic groups, the system functions as a mechanism of exclusion and control. Systemic violations of civil and political rights occur in tandem with increasing exclusion of ethnic minorities from a top-down policy of economic development, especially evident in Mongolian, Tibetan, and Uyghur autonomous regions. (Published February 2007) (Chinese version)
Devastating Blows: Religious Repression of Uighurs in Xinjiang - A joint report by Human Rights in China and Human Rights Watch - This report details Chinese government methods for controlling and curtailing Uyghur religious expression in the oil-rich Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China. It is based on firsthand accounts as well as previously undisclosed government and Chinese Communist Party documents. (Published April 2005)
