HRIC Mourns Death of Liu Binyan

December 5, 2005

HRIC mourns the loss of Mr. Liu Binyan, who passed away on Dec. 5, 2005, and extends its sincere condolences to his family.

Mr. Liu joined the Chinese Communist Party in the 1940s. Although he suffered from persecution and was expelled from the CCP many times, he exposed and critiqued social injustice and was a steady advocate for the basic rights of ordinary people in China. Mr. Liu lived in forced exile for more than 17 years until his death.

During a long illness, Mr. Liu contacted the Chinese government many times about returning to China for medical treatment. However, despite sending his requests through the highest channels, he received no response from the government. To deprive an elderly person who made a significant contribution to Chinese society of his final wish to return to his homeland is an act that lacks humanity. In light of this, HRIC urges the government to change its policy of forced exile of dissidents and public figures.
